What’s not covered

The exact exclusions are set by the insurer who underwrites your policy, so they can vary. The list below shows the main exclusions you can typically expect — your policy wording sets out exactly what applies to your cover, so please read it.
- Your excess — there may be more than one (a compulsory excess plus any voluntary excess you chose, and additional excesses for glass or younger drivers), shown in your personal details
- Wear and tear, including tyres and brakes
- Deliberate or reckless damage by you or anyone insured on the policy
- Theft or attempted theft if you leave the car unlocked, the engine running, the key/ignition device in or near the car or in range, or a window or sun-roof open
- Drivers not named on your certificate of motor insurance, and anyone without a valid licence, disqualified, or breaking the conditions of their licence
- Use not allowed by your certificate — hire and reward (taxi, ride-hailing), delivery or couriering, peer-to-peer hire, racing, pace-making, speed trials, track days, certain rallies, motor-trade use (beyond upkeep and repair), and towing for reward or towing more than one trailer
- Personal accident cover where injury or death results from suicide or attempted suicide, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, or not wearing a seatbelt where required by law
- Liability arising only from a contract; use for criminal purposes
- War, radioactive contamination and pollution, and anything related to a cyber attack
- Motor legal expenses and the guaranteed hire car apply only within the territorial limits
